Over the past two months, I have had the opportunity to facilitate workshops related to transformational leadership. Within the group are professional educators attempting to develop a vision for the future of education and a pipeline of new administrators within their state. One significant benefit for me of serving as a facilitator is the exchange of knowledge - not only what I share but also what I receive from the community of professional educators participating in the professional development. As part of the learning process, I begin to reflect on my own leadership style and understanding of transformational leadership. Because of this experience, I decided not only to review the information we are using as part of the workshop but also to explore other sources of information to continue growing my own leadership capacity. Education Reimagined publishes a document entitled "A Transformational Vision for Education in the U.S." As part of the introduction of who the organization is and what they believe, the following is stated:
"SIMPLY PUT, the current system was designed in a different era and structured for a different society. Our economy, society, and polity are increasingly at risk from an educational system that does not consistently prepare all children to succeed as adults and is least effective for the children facing the greatest social and economic challenges."
Moving from transactional to transformational has been talked about for several years. Given that I believe the aforementioned to be true, over the next few weeks, I will write and share information about transformational leadership. If you believe the current system is structured for a different society (or even if you don't), I hope you will join me on this journey to reflect, think, and grow as we continue working to create a better system that prepares our students to succeed as adults. So, let's get started with my initial thoughts, "Transformative Leadership Takes Your Organization to the Next Level. . . and Beyond."
